Abstract
Recycling is a fundamental strategy in solid waste management, which, among other benefits, provides pollution reduction, helps preserve natural resources, reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills, and enables the integration of recyclable material pickers into the workforce. This research aimed to demonstrate the recycling practices developed by a group of picker associations, identify the main recycled materials, and discuss the challenges and opportunities to enhance the activities carried out by recyclable material pickers. As a result of the research, it was identified that the work is challenging, as a significant portion of the collected materials were still mixed and contaminated, greatly impairing the sorting and recycling process. There was also a lack of infrastructure and equipment for recycling the materials, highlighting the need for greater recognition and appreciation of recyclable material pickers. The promotion and creation of public policies enabling appropriate waste disposal practices are urgent and crucial for a more sustainable world, and recycling associations should be recognized as key agents in waste collection, sorting, and disposal. Therefore, organizing these enterprises becomes pertinent. However, this research also contributes by providing results that can be used as hypotheses for further observations and applications regarding recycling activities in Brazil
